The Forced Uyghur Labor Behind the Fish You Eat
China forces minorities from Xinjiang to work in industries around the country. As it turns out, this includes processing much of the seafood sent to America and Europe.
Before now, no one knew that much of the world's seafood was being processed in Chinese plants that use state-sponsored forced labor, particularly in the form of workers from Xinjiang province.
This is a big deal because in the US any product tied to Xinjiang labor is banned from import. But we found that hundreds of grocery stores, restaurants, even federal agencies are tied to importers getting seafood from processing plants using Xinjiang workers.
